Assigning Meaningful Names to Soundcard Input and Output Devices
de W4TV
When connected to your PC via a USB cable, recent transceivers create virtual soundcard input and output devices that WinWarbler and WSJT-X can be configured to utilize for digital, but assign them generic names like Line - USB Audio Codec and Speakers - USB Audio Codec. This can cause confusion, particularly if you are controlling multiple transceivers.
To minimize confusion, give each device a meaningful name; in Windows 11,
In the Windows Settings window, select the System section
In the System section, select the Sound subsection
In the Sound subsection, select More Sound settings
In the Sound window that appears
select the Recording tab
double-click the entry for the radio's receive audio source to display the Properties window for that source
at the top of the Properties window, rename the source to something meaningful, e.g. FT10DX Receive Codec
click the OK button
select the Playback tab
double-click the entry for the radio's transmit audio source to display the Properties window for that source
at the top of the Properties window, rename the source to something meaningful, e.g. FT10DX Transmit Codec
click the OK button
Rename the soundcard devices created by each of your transceivers, as well as your PC's soundcard devices.
