Eliminating Phantom COM ports

  1. in a CMD window, execute the following commands:

    1. set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1

    2. cd c:\windows\system32

    3. start devmgmt.msc

  2. in the Device Manager window that appears after step 1.c,

    1. in the View menu, select Show Hidden Devices

    2. click on the + or triangle to the left of Ports to display a list of all present Ports

    3. click the Port you wish to delete, and strike the Delete key

    4. when asked, confirm your intention to delete the Port
