Configuring Pathfinder to Use an External Web Browser
Microsoft has stopped supporting the Internet Explorer web browser around which Pathfinder is constructed. As a result, Pathfinder cannot fully display web pages that exploit extensions to HTML - like those now used by Google maps. You can overcome this limitation by configuring Pathfinder to display web pages on a web browser of your choice instead of on its built-in instance of Internet Explorer. In the Configuration window's External Browser panel,
click the Select button
in the Select web browser executable file... window that appears, navigate to the folder containing the .exe file for the web browser of your choice, and double-click the entry for the .exe file
check the Use external browser box
With Use external browser enabled
- the vertical size of Pathfinder's Main window will be reduced, as its built-in instance of Internet Explorer will no longer be displayed
at startup, the specified QRZ password is placed in the Windows clipboard to facilitate logging in to QRZ.com
Unlike Pathfinder's built-in instance of Internet Explorer, browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox will display the results of each search in a new tab. If you prefer that the results of each search replace the results of the previous search,
Available extensions to Google Chrome can limit the display to a single tab or can limit the display of a specified domain to a single tab; the latter can be configured to display the results of all QRZ searches in a single tab while displaying pages from other domains in separate tabs. After enabling an extension, you can later remove it if desired.
- Mozilla Firefox can be configured for single-tab operation:
in the address bar where you'd normally type a URL, type about:preferences and then strike the Enter key
in the address bar where you'd normally type a URL, type about:config and then strike the Enter key
on the Proceed with Caution page that appears, click the Accept the Risk and Continue button
at the top of the page that's displayed, click the Show All link
scroll down to the browser.link.open_newwindow setting, click the Pencil icon to its right, change the value to 1, and then click the Checkmark icon to its right
scroll down to the browser.link.newwindow.restriction setting, click the Pencil icon to its right, change the value to 1, and then click the Checkmark icon to its right
- If you use Google Chrome for web browsing, consider configuring Pathfinder to use Mozilla Firefox configured for single-tab operation as its external browser. Alternatively, if you use Mozilla Firefox for web browsing, consider configuring Pathfinder to use Google Chrome configured for single-tab operation as its external browser
